Gutter Guard Installation in Hixson, TN

Leaves that used to fill the channel stay on top of it instead. That changes how often you are up a ladder. It does not take you off the ladder for good.

The honest version

Are Gutter Guards Worth It?

A guard is a cover over the channel. It lets water through and keeps the larger material out, which is what stops a gutter packing solid and overflowing down the fascia.

On a property under trees that is a real change. The clearing that used to be an annual job on a ladder becomes a check rather than an excavation, and the downspouts stop blocking at the top.

What a guard does not do is end maintenance. Anything sold to you as fit and forget is being oversold, and the people who end up disappointed are usually the ones who were promised that.

Before anything goes on

Fitting Leaf Guards to an Existing Gutter

A guard is only ever as good as the gutter underneath it. Covering a system that is already sagging, pitched wrong or leaking at the corners just makes the fault harder to reach.

So the existing run gets checked first. Pitch, hanger spacing, the state of the outlets, and whether it is sitting where it should be against the fascia. If something needs sorting, that is gutter repair and it comes first.

Occasionally the honest answer is that the gutter is near the end of its life and guards would be money spent on the wrong thing. We will say that rather than fit over it.

The options

Gutter Guard Types: Mesh, Screen and Covers

These are the categories you will come across while shopping around. Which one suits your roof depends on the debris you actually get, so it is worth going through on site rather than picking off a list.

  1. Perforated metal

A metal panel with punched holes, fixed over the channel and under the shingle course. This is the type on most of the jobs in our photos.

  2. Mesh and micro-mesh

A finer screen over a frame. It stops smaller material than perforated metal does, and the trade-off is that the surface itself needs attention more often.

  3. Screen

The simplest and cheapest option, a coarse screen laid over the gutter. It handles leaves and little else.

  4. Solid covers

A solid lid that leaves a slot at the front for water to curl into. They shed leaves well, and they are the fussiest about how the roof pitch and the rain actually behave.

We do not name manufacturers or display brand logos on this site, and nothing here is a particular branded product. If you have been quoted a specific system elsewhere and want a straight opinion on it, ask.

Setting expectations

Gutter Guard Maintenance Expectations

Here is what still happens with guards on. Shingle grit, seed, pine needles and the fine material that blows around all settle on top, and some of it works through. Needles in particular find their way into almost anything.

So the realistic position is a look once or twice a year and an occasional brush off the top, instead of hauling handfuls out of the channel. That is a worthwhile change. It is not the same as never thinking about it.

Questions

Gutter Guard Installation Questions

Will guards fit the gutters I already have?

Usually, provided the existing run is sound and a standard size. The check is about condition rather than age, so an older system in good order is generally fine.

Where it gets awkward is an unusual profile, a half-round, or a gutter that has been patched enough times that the line is no longer straight.

Which type should I pick?

It comes down to what lands on your roof. Broad leaves are easy and almost anything handles them. Pine needles and seed are the difficult ones and they narrow the choice.

Tell us what the trees around the house are and we can narrow it down quickly.

Do guards stop birds and pests nesting?

A covered channel is a lot less inviting than an open one full of damp leaf litter, so in practice it helps. We would not sell it to you as pest control, because that is not what it is.

Do I still need the gutters cleaned?

Less often, and it becomes a different job. Most of it is clearing the top surface rather than digging out the channel.

If you would rather not be up a ladder at all, gutter cleaning covers guarded systems too.

Can guards go on a new system?

Yes, and that is the easiest time to do it, because the guard and the gutter get chosen together. If you are already looking at a new installation, raise it at the estimate.
