Copper Gutters for Homes in Hixson, TN

Copper on the elevations that are worth it, in the profile the architecture asks for. Usually a bay, a portico or a turret rather than the whole house.

The material

Why Choose Copper Gutters

Copper is chosen for how it looks and how it ages, not because it drains any better than aluminum. On the right house it reads as part of the architecture rather than something bolted to the edge of it.

It costs a good deal more than aluminum, both in material and in the work, so most copper jobs are not a whole roofline. They are the elevation you see from the street, the bay, the entry, or the roof you look at from the yard.

Copper is a finish decision with a real budget attached. If you are weighing it up, the useful conversation is which elevations earn it, not whether to do the entire house in it.

How it ages

How Copper Weathers and Patinas

New copper is bright, close to a penny. It does not stay that way, and that is the point of choosing it.

It darkens through browns first, and over a long time outdoor copper can go to the green verdigris people picture. How fast, and how far, depends on the weather it sits in, how much sun and rain that elevation gets, and what is running over it off the roof. Two elevations on the same house often age differently.

We will not put a number of years on any of that, because it varies too much to be honest about. If an even, predictable color matters to you, say so early, because that changes the recommendation.

Half-Round and Euro Box Gutter Styles

These are profiles, not materials. A half-round gutter can be copper, but it can equally be aluminum, and the same goes for a box profile. Choosing the shape and choosing the metal are two separate decisions.

  • K-style

The standard profile on almost every house around here. The stepped front is meant to echo crown molding.

  • Half-round

A plain semicircular trough. It suits older and more traditional houses, and it is the profile most people picture when they picture copper.

  • Euro box

A squared trough, usually with a rolled front edge. It reads cleanly on modern and contemporary elevations.

The drawings are cross-sections, not photographs of our own work. We have no half-round or box job in the photo library yet, and we would rather draw the shape than show you something that is not it. Availability of a given profile is worth confirming when you get in touch.

Specialty Gutter Materials

Copper is the specialty material we handle most, and it is the one with real work behind it on this page. Steel and zinc come up occasionally, usually when someone is matching an existing detail or has been specified a metal by an architect.

Both are worth asking about rather than assuming either way. Cost, lead time and what is actually gettable all move around, so the honest answer depends on the job in front of us.

Questions

Copper and Specialty Gutter Questions

Is copper worth it over aluminum?

It depends entirely on what you want from it. Functionally, a well-hung aluminum system moves water just as well for a fraction of the cost.

Copper earns its money on appearance and on how it suits a particular house. If nobody is going to see the elevation, it is difficult to justify. If it is the first thing you see coming up the driveway, that is a different answer.

Will copper turn green?

Outdoors, over a long enough period, it can. It goes through brown and darker tones on the way there, and plenty of copper never gets all the way to green in a given lifetime on a given house.

We will not quote you a timescale for it. Exposure, rainfall, sun and whatever comes down off the roof onto it all change the pace, which is why two sides of the same house can look different.

Do half-round gutters have to be copper?

No, and this is the most common mix-up on this page. Half-round is a shape. It is available in ordinary aluminum, and plenty of half-round gutters are.

Copper just happens to be what people have usually seen half-round fitted in, because the two tend to suit the same sort of house.

Can you get steel or zinc?

Ask about the specific job. What we can source moves around, and promising a metal we then cannot get hold of helps nobody.

Does a copper estimate work differently?

The visit is the same and it is still free. What differs is that a copper job usually involves deciding where the copper stops, so expect to walk the elevations and talk about which ones are carrying it.

Mixed jobs are normal. Copper on the front, aluminum seamless everywhere else, is a very common answer.
